I've been taught that in rueda 'arriba' (up) means anticlockwise, and 'abajo' (down) means clockwise



Arriba means " Above " and or Upwards.as abajo means downwards.

They have no relationship to direction in terms of rotation ... if they ( those terms ) are used to signify Right ( derecha ) and or Left ( izquierdo ) by a teacher, its not a" normal application.. when i teach in Spanish I always use directional terms.
But... It could also be dilectical
